I have been using lubuntu and Ubuntu 10.04 for the past couple of years, thought I would go ahead and do a clean install of Ubuntu 11.10 to see how it ran on this old computer :)
I have to say...
I would try Lubuntu :D
Do a search on clonezilla it will do a image of your old hard drive, once you get the new one you can copy the image to your new hard drive and wont have to reinstall anything.

I'll wait and see if this maintenance release solves a lot of problems or not.
I do have the Intel chip set that is described in the release notes but I will wait a little longer.
You are not alone a lot of people are having problems you are describing and still no fixes.
I don't think gnome is the problem, been Having this problem since 10.04 came out yes it has gotten better, but not good enough for me. I will use 8.04 until its end of life than try 10.04 again.
No bugs, video works great no freezing :D
Yup I still can't use 10.04, I still get the random freezes so back to using 8.04 which works great.
xubuntu isn't much better than gnome.
you might try ubuntu with lxde;

Make this a sticky in the tips section
I was able to get rid of using the nvidia driver and using just xorg.conf file.
Works great on 8.04:p
Wow Usenet and newsgroups are still around haven't used them in years.

Are you running any flash sites? when I do my fans go to full speed to cool down the machine. This happens in firefox and chrome.
I would suggest 8.04 for intel chipsets to many problems right with karmic at least with me.
There is a thread having instructions how to remove pulse audio and use alsa or ossl. I'll see if I can find it.
Will this work on 8.04LTS??
Same problem with my dell dimension 2400 also, reverted back to 8.04 no freeze ups at all.

I have this problem with evolution every now then, I think it is on the server side.
I think Evolution is better than Thunderbird at handling spam.
