Which comes up in 5-10 seconds (on Feisty). Hardly the 5-30 minutes you were talking about earlier.
The icons in view load first while the rest load in the background.
Most users won't have...
Exactly. Under Nautilus preferences there is an option to set the maximum file size to thumbnail, which I believe is about 5MB or so is the default.
The KDE bug ComplexNumber bought up is just...
Ah, thanks.
You right click on the file area background and select "Large Icons" and then "Thumbnail Previews".
See post #12. Even with 4469 images it starts to appears on screen in about 5 seconds and takes about 30 to fully thumbnail them all. The vast majority of use will be in folders with under a hundred...
I'd assume that either clicking the paper-and-pen or crtl+L would bring up the text entry mode as per Nautilus.
Well there should be a "View as List" option right where the "View as Icons"...
Well I don't claim to be a usability expert by any means (though I did study a unit of it at uni), however I have personally found this particular GTK interface to be much more frustrating for very...
Without clicking expanding the simple file view pictured in the first image it is impossible to save anywhere other then a bookmarked folder or the previously used.
I don't see the point in having...
I wasn't talking about that at all. I was referring to the first image, the simple GTK file-save dialog.
My point was how can I tell what an image is (aside from the filename) from the list view...
Or perhaps the better idea is to sort your images better so you don't have 1032 in one folder :p
I could see your argument about waiting for thumbnails making sense on something like XFCE, but on...
OK, I've done a reset and run a test.
Initial startup (desktop only): 4.4MB
Nautilus browsing home folder: 8.9MB
Browsing folder with 23 images: 10.1MB
293 items: 19.9MB
663 items: 53.1MB...
I disagree. I've got a folder (on a NTFS-3G mounted filesystem no less) that contains 663 images, and it only takes about 15 seconds to generate all the thumbnails from scratch and Nautilus remains...
Am I the only one here who absolutely hates the GTK file selector?

I'm having the same problem on my Toshiba Tecra A6 using the alternate install.
The disc passed validation, I don't know where to find the image ID but it's the one listed for Herd 2.

Nice find!
This program looks very well done!
I often think that it's in fact those who are in favour of installing the binary drivers who are the "Idealists".
As it stands, Linux desktop market share would be around 2% at maximum. Let's just...

I am seriously having doubts that I could even call the Linux kernel "Open-Source" anymore with a straight face after reading some of these replies.

A lot more gentle on the eyes but I think I prefer the orange to the brown.
I think it's pretty pathetic that Linux has come to the point where it is mostly useless without GPL-infringing (but tolerated) binary drivers.
This is exactly what Theo de Raadt and RMS have been...
Illegal but mostly unenforced.
Most fansub groups "drop" a series once it become licensed for US distribution, though nowadays less and less of them are opting to do that ;-)
I thought that some parts still had yet to GPLed. Obviously not.
From what I understand:
Wireless drivers w/ binary blob firmware: Yes, as they have always been.
Nvidia/ATi proprietary drivers: Rather unlikely. (I guess, Shuttleworth's answer was rather vague)...
XviD is open source and can decode DivX just fine.
Though there are some software patent issues (in the USA) that prevent it from being included by default.
Well at least it's not like RMS had an awful lot of respect to lose :-)
