The only backend listed there is GStreamer so I am installing phonon-backend-vlc now and will then reboot. will report in a minute ;-)

What happens is that the hard drive, wifi, and bluetooth light come back on (with the hard drive light flashing/indicating activity). The screen comes on again but is all black with no mouse pointer...
