It could be that the interfaces file was borked. If you come accross the same probelm again try removing the interfaces file /etc/network/interface

Try
killall nm-applet to stop Network manager.
The wireless script in the link below will also be helpful. If it doesn't fix the problem it will output all the necessary information for people...

if you post the results.txt generated by the wireless script (link below) people will be able to assist :-)
you could try using the continuous connectivity checking function of the wireless script. Then when the connection drops it will read the relevant logs and maybe point to the issue
Atheros chipsets are usually not a problem
