    I was advised it was likely that, given the changes in graphics in 12.04, my machine would not work. So I stayed with 10.04. I imagine 14.04 would also pose a problem.

    That is correct. And those errors (I'm pretty sure) were replicated exactly when I tried to install from Ubuntu Software Center.
