How does one turn off the rather annoying list of applications which can also be installed? For a new user/system, it may be useful, but for a working system, all it does is take up screen space.

I have the same problem on a Toshiba P105-S9337. The sound card in this laptop is a Conexant CX20549 (Venice).
Try redownloading the file again. It sounds like maybe you got a corrupted copy.
