    use the add printer setup to add the printer using the PPD
    find out the IP address from the router for the printer then add that address to the printer setup
    something like this within connection...

    please try recovery mode
    hit/hold/press the shift key at boot

    this should give you the option of using the last kernel to boot from since the update ...

    as stated use/run a live linux ubuntu cd/usb and save any data on the drive from there to a usb key drive or upload it to on-line storage ...

    if you have separate partitions for
    / (root)
    /swap
    /home

    all you do is format / (root) and reinstall
    leave the other partitions alone, do not format

    if you do not have separate partitions...

    had that update message a few days ago and updated
    my 12.04.4 had to be reinstalled but i do have separate partitions for /, /swap, /home
    so no data lost

    after the update on a clean 12.04.4...
