voted system - ext3, storage - xfs. All my servers are setup this way.
The drive has to be mounted, that was an example.
In the gparted or disk utility, you must specify a mount point for the drive.
Or you must mount it manually.
Second answer to your second question:
Yes, it is possible to make samba not ask for username/pass.
In the /etc/samba/smb.conf file, change the security=user to security=share
Correct, because you need to apply some permissions to them. So if your Ubuntu server drive is mounted to something like /mnt/drive, then apply permissions to it from the terminal.

Does the /home/user/www dir exist? It must exist first. Thats the only other thing I can think of. It should just work.
Use sudo before the mount command. Only super user can use mount.
Its a DHCP "feature". If you change to a static ip, it will not do that.
Search the bug reports, there are many, many entries about this exact behaviour.
Disabling dhcp and swithing to static...
same issue for me. Also having trouble with some flash movies on some websites playing at all.
I have a server that runs fedora. I have 2 storage raid volumes on that server. If I install Ubuntu, will it detect and use the raid volumes without having to redo them?
I also recommend postfix. Much easier to configure, and better support available.
Your vsftpd needs to be updated to a more recent version. Filezilla developer decided a few months ago to intentionally break his filezilla client. His rational was that all ftp servers were wrong....
lftp is my favorite.
The UID and GID are going to be different for sure. One OS starts at 500, the other starts at 1000 for user accounts. I am not familiar though with migrating user passwords, so im sorry to say i...
open is a command used to connect to another server. Thats why it tells you to disconnect first.
Use the command ls to get a directory listing.
You can use opendns instead of your isp.

Or you could setup your own dns servers via bind. Bind works great however it is not what I would call easy. Great care...

Just remember, you have to move the que to your machine (i.e,...
vnstat is an excellent command line bw monitor. I use it to monitor my dedicated servers.
Tried that. It only delays the start of the command. It does not delay in between each post.
Thanks for the suggestion though.
My script works great but it floods me off IRC. It looks into a dir and prints the folders/files which are under a week old. It works great, but if the dir gets alot of files in a week, the output...
I'm having trouble with sound in ubuntu 8.10. After watching a couple flash videos, the next day, my sound quits working. Videos have no sound and sound on the entire machine quits.
WTF?
History in synaptic was most helpful. Thanks for the hint. I will try deborphan in the future.
Thanks.
I installed virtualbox and decided later that i don't like it. How do I remove all of the dependancies that were installed? Using synaptic to remove virtualbox does just that, then leave all of the...
