You should just do a re-install ive ran into a problem like this and i had to re-install it was the quickest way

256mb ram i do recommend lubuntu I brought ram because i wanted xubuntu because of its looks it runs like a beast bringing up google chrome takes about 2 secs i had lubuntu when i had 256mb ram...
