You need to edit this file: /etc/default/grub
Look for GRUB_DEFAULT=0
Change this to whatever the entry for windows is and you should be fine.

Thanks for the tip. I did a lot of googling and reading, but haven't found a way to turn on the mic boost :-(
I toggled capture for all sources, doesn't make a difference.
Also remember: the microphone is working, just at a very low level, which renders it useless.
