    [kubuntu] System stalls

    Hi there,

    I am using Kubuntu 8.10, KDE 4.2.

When I don't touch the computer (keyboard or mouse) for a minute or so the system pauses until I touch the mouse or keyboard. This is a bit annoying...

  4. Re: Share a line about Linux that could start an argument!

Guess it depends on where you wanted to start the argument.

If on a Linux form, it would be easy to say something along the lines of "Linux is inferior to Windows in every way"* and all hell...
  5. Re: Behold the 'Ecofont': The environmentally friendly & open source font

I actually think it is a very good idea. Lots of places still print a lot of material. I work in a university and I know that the printing costs are huge. It is really hard to read academic articles...

Poll: Re: Are you a pure vegetarian?

Yes this is true, although the pervasiveness of it would be hard to gauge as I imagine that how widespread it is would depend on how different funding structures work etc.

    But in terms of global...

Being a hypocrite does not, of course, make one's arguments unsound.

Poll: Re: Are you a pure vegetarian?

Does that mean you care about what scientist say, as they are generally neither hippy, celebs, or political.

I don't care what hippies or celebrities say about it either. But I do care a) what...

Poll: Re: Are you a pure vegetarian?

One can definitely draw a distinction between eating animals and eating things that animals produce, which is what many vegetarians do. I think that you can draw a moral distinction between the two...

Poll: Re: Are you a pure vegetarian?

Ah, that old gem. Are you serious?

Some people seem to not realise that there is a morally significant difference between plants and animals, i.e. that (most) animals are sentient. Which is why we...

Poll: Re: Are you a pure vegetarian?

PS: the most common fallacy I encounter from meat eaters when disgussing vegetariansim is "eating meat is natural and therefore morally right thing to do". i.e. our ancestors did it, haven't you...

Poll: Re: Are you a pure vegetarian?

I've been a strict vegetarian for 16 yrs now.

What I do find amusing is how sometimes (it used to happen loads more, but veges are more accepted nowdays - where I live anyway) non-vegetarians...

  15. [kubuntu] How do I download / install widgets from the Internet?

    I am using Kubuntu 8.10 KDE 4.1.

I can add widgets to the desktop but only those that are already installed from the Kubuntu Intrepid install.

When I try to use the "download widgets from the...

Poll: Re: Poor cat... will he survive ?

I realise you have named the cat already, but reading this thread before I did think that "Diesel" was a cool name for a cat when you said he "sounds like a diesel (engine)" as in purr.
  19. Re: Apple Mac Pro emits toxic carginogenic gases

Sure, a quantitative analysis to tell if there is substance in the air (but agin, it is no good to do this from a subjective point of view, ie. my computer smells so that must be making my eyes water...
  20. Re: Apple Mac Pro emits toxic carginogenic gases

They could be related. But wouldn't a double blind test be better than anecdotal hypothesising.
  21. Re: Apple Mac Pro emits toxic carginogenic gases

Which is the mark that many big computer manufactures probably get as well. One doesn't suspect that making computers can ever be "green" - loads of energy, plastics, mining of rare metals, lead, etc...
  22. Re: Apple Mac Pro emits toxic carginogenic gases

Just rumours and hearsay until they publish the findings, peer reviewed would be best as well.

Still, if it is true, I wonder if it is only the Apple Mac Pro, or loads of other laptops as well?...

Re: Philosophy - What is truth?

Sometimes I type so fast this old Pentium 4 just can't keep up and gets all confused!

Although I might point out that "Tounge" is legitimate spelling of "Tongue" in Ye Olde English.
