With newer PCs/laptops you hardly can cook CPU, it will turn off far reaching dangerous treshold. Older ones usually also save themselves from overheating.

Is ethernet working? If it is and if you can, try to connect by cable and update the system.
In my case it downloaded drivers and my wi-fi started to work.

Could you please paste here the boot errors? They might be the problem.

There might be some driver incompatibility, something not loading fully, or something else, best if you provide more data.

Have you monitored the resources? Like swap, ram etc?

Make sure that the "cups" service is running. In my case after update it "droped out" from autostart.

I would try with editing /etc/default/grub.

You might have done a "partial upgrade". Problems of this type might occur when you upgrade while there are not all files uploaded or you have some dependencies problems.
Try rerunning the upgrade...

To determine where you want to istall GRUB, try running in a terminal in try linux mode on live cd:

df -hwhich will show you your partitions/discs.
Having partitions like xyz1 (and other numbers)...
