Open the VLC messages window (Ctrl-M) before you try to play the DVD and see what it says.

You need to post the last message before the crash. You will probably find it easily due to the time difference to the next one that should be related to booting the system. The info in the messages...
Can you check the log files in /var/log for the time of the crash? The interesting ones should be messages, kern.log and syslog.
