Hi, I have had the same problem with booting from a live cd/usb. Using Plop boot manager solved this for me.
About booting from your harddrive, I honestly don't know how to solve that.
You can try to uninstall Sugar. If you really want to keep it, you might want to disable all the shortcuts the program uses.

2. Install Ubuntu on usb stick 2
3. boot with usb stick one inserted
