  1. [ubuntu] Re: Use an existing Ubuntu installation in a Hyper-V instance?

    Hmmm.

Okay, but if I understand correctly, I will then have two Ubuntu instances: the image file I load into Hyper-V, and the one I boot into going the multi-boot route. Over time, these will get...
  2. [ubuntu] Use an existing Ubuntu installation in a Hyper-V instance?

I'm dual-booting Win10 Pro and Ubuntu 16.04 on a quad-core Xeon box with 8GB RAM. Win10 and Ubuntu are installed on and boot from and SSD. Data is mostly kept on a SATA HD.

    Since Hyper-V is an...

    Re: Ubuntu on Windows 10

What Canonical has done is work with MS to develop libraries that will be used in providing bash and friends in a CLI under Windows. This [i]won't[/t] be a full GUI Ubuntu installation.

    It's...

[xfce] [SOLVED] Re: Ubuntu update broke screen resolution

And this may be even more annoying.

Googling on related issues pointed me at some things I could try. When I switched back to the Ubuntu box, the problem had mysteriously solved itself. ...

[xfce] Ubuntu update broke screen resolution

    Okay, this is annoying.

I'm running Ubuntu 12.04 LTS. The box it's installed on uses onboard Intel video, and I normally use XFCE4 as my desktop.

    I have a 27" AOC monitor that uses 1920x1080...
  6. [ubuntu] Re: frequency out of range problem in ubuntu natty grub

I'm having a different but related problem. I have Ubuntu 11.10 installed on an old Fujitsu Lifebook p2110. It was installed originally from an older version Minimal CD and upgraded in place.

    [all variants] Lxde quirks

I'm running Ubuntu 10.10 on an old Fujitsu Lifebook p2110. It's a low-end box, with an 867mhz Transmeta Crusoe CPU, a 40GB UDMA 4 HD, and 256MB or RAM (which the Crusoe grabs 16MB of off the top for...

[ubuntu] ATI video problem in Ubuntu 10.4 LTS

I just upgraded from Ubuntu 9.10 to 10.4. The target box is a Fujitsu Lifebook p2110 circa 2002, with an 876mhz Crusoe processor, 256MB of RAM, and a 40GB UDMA4 HD, multibooting Win2K Pro, Ubuntu,...
  9. [all variants] Re: Telling Ubuntu to use a FAT32 partition as Swap?

The rule of thumb I use is twice installed RAM, but whether I use a swap partition at all depends upon installed RAM.

Swap is part of virtual memory. If more physical RAM is needed for something...

[xubuntu] Re: Performance tuning for low end hardware

I may do that at some point. I have Ubuntu 9.10 in a triple boot on mydesktop with Win2K and XP, and it's a 1.8ghz box with 4GB RAM and much faster drives.

I have Fluxbox on the Puppy slice on...

I didn't expect to try to use it as a PBX. It was mostly just to learn about it, and a matter of "Why? Because I can!" :)

Yeah, I know the specs on the Linksys. I saw people doing insane...

Blame IBM, for choosing to reserve RAM above 640K for the system. I recall the chap who wrote what became MS-DOS (Seattle Computer Product's 86DOS) had some snarky things to say about the design...

Puppy uses a 2.6 kernel, and is fairly sprightly. (It's intended for low end kit, and the devs are always looking for tinier programs to substitute in the base install.) Third-party apps like...

And in fact, I did just that, in the process of upgrading Puppy to v4.31. It helped a lot. Puppy is still sprightlier, but Ubuntu installed that way is actually usable on the Lifebook.

    Thanks...
