After making ubuntu bootable on my USB, i checked about the casper script bug in hardy. To fix it I extracted the initrd, made the modification, and then repacked it as:

$gzip -dc initrd.gz |...

Well guys, the reason is that the casper script in the initrd, which performs certain functions during boot looks for a partition with label "casper-rw", and tries to mount this partition during boot...

The kernel was finally built successfully. I had missed compiling "Generic IDE support", which i located by seeing the modules loaded by my default kernel, after machine boot.

root device (0,0) does exist, because when GRUB boots and passes the root parameter to kernel, it displayes the device correctly and the filesystem too.

I have problems with the new kernel i compiled, using the vanilla kernel for version 2.6.11.

I have tried every suggestion possible, (compile IDE, SCSI though i dont have SCSI devices!, RAID,...
