Open the home folder from the unity panel
now in title bar select go and Computer
there they are..
once you open them .. they'll be available in panel as well
what's your host OS
try VMware, it automatically links the host files to the client

don't boot the Ubuntu in GUI but boot it in Recovery console and update the OS from there

btw upgrading really helps u to stay updated with all the fixes and it's recommended
from the Live CD of the OS enter the recovery mode and from there check for boot status
what's the big deal if the looks match, hardware is still so different
