What are the commands you listed, used for?
Do you have a JDK installed preferably Oracle Java? The commands work fine for me in Mint 11 with the latest Oracle JDK.

Just run the installer by doing something like
sh netbeans-7.0.1-ml-javase-linux.sh
Both are very good distros and I'd feel comfortable with anyone of them. I'd suggest you try both and then stick with the one that you like.
