    Kerberos is needed indeed or your administrator user account for the domain won't be able to authenticate against said domain. (...and probably the provision step...

    Yup , untill you append necessary paths to the environnement path configuration file, you need so prefix every single of your commands with /usr/local/samba/bin/ or /usr/local/samba/sbin/ depending...

    git clone -b v4-1-stable git://git.samba.org/samba.git samba41
    then go to that new folder and go


    ./configure --enable-debug...

    I d have to try that... though practically on a server you'd only need admins to get entiteled to launch sudo commands (there shouldn't be that many)

    That's not a version holy war (although I like the term) but by experience up to date products still...

    you should go Samba 4.1 (it's been out for 1 week now) compile from source no problem .
    4.0.3 is quite old and can't handle replication and such.

    yup, You have a kerberos issue.

    Check /etc/krb5.conf and /usr/local/samba/share/setup/krb5.conf

    I have my samba DC running on Proxmox 3.1 too. no probleme there.
    Why did you add --use-ntvfs?

    it's in the guide that's not pdc and bdc (which don't exist in this context.) it's KDC and adminserver if you left one blank you found your problem.

    kinit administrator@MYDOMAIN.LAN (has to be capital letters or will fail / will ask for your domain administrator password )
    klist -e (will display informations about the kerberos...
