I've run the usb stick and tried to mount the usb hdd and it wont mount. I took a screen shot and attached it. still battling on.

My work laptop running XP is a Dell and IT have put Anywhere+ on it that stops all the sites I want to use, i.e FB Hotmail blah blah.

Solution- run Ubuntu 11.04 off a USB hard drive...

just thought i'd report back on sucess, hda1 (now sda1)is now a single ext3 partition, sda1 is now sdb1 as / sdb2 is /home and 2gb swap, hardy heron installed a treat.

I've edited my X11/xorg.conf to 'nv' and gone for a reboot. For some reason it still boots in low resolution with a failsafe X11/xorg.conf. If I then change resolution its ok till the next boot!...
