During the breakage used:
# dpkg -i /var/cache/apt/archives/libgcc1_1%3a4.8.2-15ubuntu3_amd64.deb
to get aptitude/apt-get working again.
Now after the latest updates:
Sorry for any confusion. I wasn't talking about removing packages. What happened was, when I was configuring the vanilla kernel I downloaded last night from kernel.org before compiling it I think I...
Sorry have only been able to try with the legacy driver on this box (nvidia-304) which doesn't work so back to nouveau for now. Other than that, working ok with the low latency config after I...
Ok, well that worked (except no go with nvidia-304):

Debs just arrived in mainline. Trying that...
Didn't quite work out. with the usual commands. :(
Based my .config on /boot/config-3.13.0-999-lowlatency (haven't tried the standard one yet).

@mörgæs: Thanks for reinstating the thread.
Still trying to decide on components. Looking at buying something along these lines:

Hi guys.
Finally about to buy parts for my broken pc.
Just wondering if there any budget boards you'd recommend as well supported by Linux. Will also use FreeBSD if and when the new hardware is...

Unfortunately my Quadro FX 1400 card in this box is only supported by the legacy driver. When I get a Haswell replacement mobo for my broken box (which has a newer GeForce card) I may be able to use...
Happy New Year all. :)
The legacy nvidia driver has now been patched to work with the 3.13 kernel. Change log available here:

You beat me to it this week. :)
Just compiled it.
Ok. At the start of the 3.13 cycle I copied /boot/config-3.13.0-031300rc1-generic to use when compiling my custom kernels before running make localmodconfig.
Maybe you could try that way? Here...
I've never actually tried compiling the source from mainline, only the vanilla source from kernel.org.
Does it fail on the kernel itself or the modules? This box is about 7 years old and I'm using...

Installed the debs, booted the new kernel, reinstalled nvidia-304.
The nvidia module built ok, but I was stuck in low graphics...
Hi Vin,
Last night when I booted 3.12 generic I was able to install nvidia 304.116 from xorg-edgers without a hitch (have stayed on the saucy branch for now because the trusty branch is still...
Can see it there now:

Let me know if it works! :)
Sorry Vin hadn't seen your thread when I posted about this a minute ago. It claims "improved support for recent Linux kernels" so maybe that includes 3.12. At work so can't try it out right now.
Nouveau hasn't actually been causing me any problems, but I've been wondering about this too.
I see from this page that 304.116 was released the other day (6th November):
