one generally needs two steps;
1) install drivers
2) register the printer with lpadmin ( the admin for linux printing on the computer ..)

lpinfo -v give from a terminal please?
also: if you open the PRINTERS folder; hit the F1 key ..... that opens a trouble-shooting wizard ............. I wonder if running that gives any...
phew; all one can suggest is to delete the existing entry from the PRINTERS folder
then run
hp-setup from the terminal; ........... that makes hplip have another go at registering the device...
so Rob; sorry to hear of these troubles; if this is a usb connection, if you plug the Brother in to your laptop; (which is where all the issues are?) ...... and you open a terminal and type
lsusb ...
