Add the PPA to your repo and you will have latest vlc 1.03 which works quite good.
My oversight, I didnt notice that you were using the built-in drivers. Since Ubuntu Karmic uses Grub 2 by default, there is some tweaking needed to make other GDM themes work. Its no bug here, the...
Thats an issue with the built in drivers, do a gksudo nvidia-xconfig, this will then create the xconfig file, then do a gksudo nvidia-settings and select your rez and save to X.
I must say even a old Unix hand like myself learned a lot from this forum and thanks to Ubuntu I can now happily push an alternate to Windows for those who are willing to give it a try. There is lots...
Go to system>administration>disk utility and select the partiion and selct bootable. It would be auto mounted next time you boot.
You can try system>preference>keyboard>layout to see if you can assign any particular key to your function.
The scroll wheel.
gksudo nvidia-settings, select your resolution and click on save to x configuration file.

Nope I just exposed you for the troll that you are, you use your alleged install of Ubuntu as an excuse to bash it every opportunity you get, plain and simple. You don't criticize, you spread FUD...
You can add glipper to gnome panel and its easy to work with it from there.
Use latest 190.42 drivers, I have absolutely no tearing either using mplayer with vdpau or vlc with my cheap 8400GS nvidia.
I teach post grad math at univ.
In this day of Quad and Octo Cores, 8-16GB RAM, bloated is but a misnomer. If my PC can't run HD vids, its useless for me. Even laptops are sporting quad cores now with 4GB RAM and for those who are...
Thank you, and in the same breath, I will do the same if you cross the threshold of becoming a Arch fanatic nuisance going over to each and every Ubuntu post and calling it slow and recommending Arch...
Thank you.
And so do you, bashing Ubuntu every chance you get, be it the Cafe or any other thread where anyone seems to be having some or other issue with Ubuntu in general. Don't go suggesting Arch to a Ubuntu...
SONY Minolta Alpha 900 works quite well here, even with huge 25MP RAW images, download is no issue.
sidux is excellent, for unstable it manages to be quite stable and best of all, its the quickest distro out there but its not for newbies as its cli and quite daunting at that.
You don't have to remove empathy to use Pidgin, they can exist side by side and not cause any issues. I would recommend leaving Empathy as removing it might remove the metapackage ubuntu-desktop
