It's good that you want to learn how to do things in linux...BUT, as the previous responders stated, it is best to NOT do those things outside your "home" folder....lest you unintentionally damage...
Just a shot in the dark...but it seems the connection is dropping after Filezilla switches to "passive mode". In Filezilla, turn off passive mode and try again. I had the same problem with passive...
Most ISP's block port 25 on their customer's connections. I would check with them and make sure it's not being blocked. It will not matter what kind of MTA you use if the port is blocked, you'll get...
You need to give the machine a static IP address, then you should be able to ssh to it.

I'll add my vote for HP printers. They're well supported.
After you learn some HTML, Bluefish is a nice, fast editor. I use it often. Like many here, I prefer to write the code for complete control. I find the WYSIWYG editors add a bunch of "junk code."

Excellent! Works like a charm now :) I added that line to the menu entry too so it's starts up I click on Skype. Very nice ;)

I used Photoshop while on Winders...but since dumping M$ for Ubuntu almost 2 yrs ago, I use Gimp with no problems. I am able to do everything with Gimp I did with Photoshop. It's a great program ;)
Yep....you'll need to open port 5900 in order for VNC to work. I routinely log into my home machine from work using the Terminal Services Client from the Internet menu. In a former job, I had to log...
About three weeks ago, I loaded Ubuntu 9.04 on an Alienware M17-R1 laptop. Everything works fine EXCEPT the ATI graphics driver...so, no compiz :( When I loaded the restricted driver, it screwed it...
Excellent! Thank you very much! I will save for future reference.
Agree it should be moved to Tutorials.
Thanks!
