The screen comes up for me to login and once I put in my password, it just freezes at the desktop. I can still CTRL+Alt+F1 to get to a terminal but the GUI just doesn't work.

Did this and it still shows the same thing after reboot.

Thanks!
Worked until I upgraded to 13.04. xrdp is still showing as installed. I'm using Remmina to connect.
Thanks in advance!
Thanks for the links!

My 2 year old got a hold of the task bar and now it's all crazy and the icons across the bottom are not showing up. I'm using xfce.

This happens a lot on older laptops. Every year or so I take them apart and use a bit of canned air to get the dust out. (My PS3 is the worst culprit)
There are tutorials all over for taking...
Looks like it was a bad power cord issue. Sorry for the trouble.
Okay, I tried Lubuntu and Puppy Linux and it's the same problem, so it's not an OS issue.
I've run memtest and it checks out just fine.
What else could it be?
What log do I need to be looking at? Trying to boot in recovery causes the same problem. I'm logged in now via a Live CD, though.
I'm running Precise on a Toshiba laptop. While booting up, it gets to a certain spot (before login) and the laptop just shuts down completely.
I've been able to run memtest on the memory sticks...
