as for an lite launcher = wbar
it is limited but real lite for old hardware.
you might want to use puppy linux - one of the ubuntu ones?
aemenu works with keys and MyGtkMenu as well.
with 9menu you need an another 9menu script for submenu(s).

Did you know that oroborus can use xfce themes?
just take the theme out of the xfwm4 folder.

yes, standard ubuntu is great--if the system can handle it.
If you have over 128ram go with xfce.
what are the specs?
I use antix-mepis with 333mhz p2 and 256 ram and it zooms.
minimal install would work but a lite distro saves time configuring.
I would go with debian/ubuntu based distro because puppy and dsl are limited on apps. I would go with debian minimal install over them.
lxde is a good choice but xfce will work with them specs.
