Also use the "Network" application to apply the proxy system wide. I've had to reboot in the past to apply these settings.

I have the same netbook and found only Xubuntu or Lubuntu were the best. Ubuntu was sluggish.

I eventually settled on Arch Linux (DWM) to get the most performance out of it.

If you are completely new to Ubuntu I wouldn't recommend duel booting yet.

Instead use VirtualBox to run x64 instance whilst you explore what's on offer.
