It might have problems with "The The", if anyone remembers them. OOH! it might have problems with "Them" as well
Try using shift " . That's what I use to get @. For some reason these are reversed on my keyboard

Have you looked at the network controller in system settings, there's an on/off switch for wi-fi?
Which DE are you using, Mate, KDE, XFCE or Cinnamon?

you can get descent AMD CPU (no GPU on it) slightly weaker than i5 and much cheaper. then add nVidia card to it.
