[ubuntu] Re: Can I mount a partition as an .iso file?

All my attempts to actually "revive" the partition have failed.
The files are still there though... I know because photorec can recover many of them. The problem is that I don't have enough free...

[ubuntu] Re: Can I mount a partition as an .iso file?

    Thank you for your reply.
I haven't tries testdisk, I will as soon as possible.
Photorec I did try, and it's not good for me. It can recover files, and you can specify the file types to recover;...

[ubuntu] Can I mount a partition as an .iso file?

Hi all, so I made this really stupid mistake when using unetbootin, and I started to wipe one of my data discs instead of a usb thumb drive.
I stopped it as soon as I realized the mistake, but now...

[ubuntu] Cardbus sound card not auto-detected

Hello, I have a Creative X-fi "cardbus" sound card. It works fine if I boot the computer with the card already inserted; but if I insert it after boot, it is not detected. Also dmesg shows absolutely...
  7. [ubuntu] Weird dependency problem with gstreamer plugins

Hello, I've had this problem since I started using Precise in late beta stage.
I thought it would fix itself after going final but it didn't.
If I try to play video clips, movieplayer says Python...

Re: Compiz / Unity broken by yesterdays updates.

I tried wiping the compiz .configs, but it didn't help.
And a unity --reset ends in segfault.
I'm hoping in an upgrade to fix things! :)

Re: Compiz / Unity broken by yesterdays updates.

This affects me too. Amd64 laptop, nvidia video card.
unity --reset did nothing, and I don't have compiz-plugins-extras package installed.

[ubuntu] Re: Launcher points to the wrong folder?

That worked, thank you! It now opens a terminal before opening the application, but I can live with that.

[ubuntu] [SOLVED] Launcher points to the wrong folder?

I set up a launcher icon to run a Windows program I use a lot. I did it with unity-launcher-editor before upgrading from 11.04 to 11.10. But it has this problem: the file is run, but the "working...
  13. [ubuntu] Re: Partition table messed up - hundreds of "ghost" partitions

So... I backed up sda8 with dd, then ran fsck on it. And it reports clean now, and the files still seem accessible. I can't say for sure if *all* the files are there, but things are looking good. ...
  14. [ubuntu] Re: Partition table messed up - hundreds of "ghost" partitions

Hehe... I was keeping it in my locker at work, because I thought that would be safer than carrying it around with me every day, with the risk of dropping or loosing it... Maybe I should keep *two*...
  15. [ubuntu] Re: Partition table messed up - hundreds of "ghost" partitions

I know... I was getting anxious and impatient and it looked like testdisk knew what it was doing, and its partition table seemed to make sense... Who knew it would change start and end point like...
  16. [ubuntu] Re: Partition table messed up - hundreds of "ghost" partitions

    Status update:
We're starting to see the light! :)
    To recap what I've done:
    - For sda1, sda7, sda8 I restored the start sector and size using what was there before testisk messed it up;
    - For...
  17. [ubuntu] Re: Partition table messed up - hundreds of "ghost" partitions

OK, I corrected the partition table (while I was at it, I also corrected sda1, which had been "shrunk" by testdisk for no appartent reason).
After reboot, sda7 and 8 (and 1) appear to mount fine,...
  18. [ubuntu] Re: Partition table messed up - hundreds of "ghost" partitions

    The e2fsck command:
    - For sda7, says
Superblock has an invalid journal (inode 8).
    Clear? no
    - For sda8 and sda11 gives a huge amount of text (123KB for sda8 and 1.2MB for sda11). Of course I...
  19. [ubuntu] Re: Partition table messed up - hundreds of "ghost" partitions

Probably stupid question: at this stage, is it better to work on the original or on the clone? I'd say either is ok, but I thought I'd ask first! :)

    Cristian
  20. [ubuntu] Re: Partition table messed up - hundreds of "ghost" partitions

I'm back... The clone is done (I didn't wait for instructions because cloning is one thing I can do:) having done it several times in the past).

    Output from fdisk -lu:

    ubuntu@ubuntu:~$ sudo...
  21. [ubuntu] Re: Partition table messed up - hundreds of "ghost" partitions

OK, thanks, I'm going to buy the new disk now, then make the backup. It scares me that if the backup process takes hours, and a single mistake while trying to fix the backup forces me to re-do it...
  22. [ubuntu] Re: Partition table messed up - hundreds of "ghost" partitions

To add to my previous message: it is true that I don't have a partition table from when everything was OK, but I do have the output of "fdisk -lu" from before the modifications made by testdisk. The...
  23. [ubuntu] Re: Partition table messed up - hundreds of "ghost" partitions

Update... I have followed the advice from comment #27 (resizing extended partition sda4) and it appears to have worked - at least, GParted now sees the partitioning. Now, before doing more damage,...
  24. [ubuntu] Re: Partition table messed up - hundreds of "ghost" partitions

Hehe, you all gave me a lot to read and do... but I'm leaving the office in 5 minutes, so I can't do it right now. I'll try your suggestions in a couple of hours hopefully, and then I'll report back....
  25. [ubuntu] Re: Partition table messed up - hundreds of "ghost" partitions

I was wondering, if tomorrow I buy a large external drive, and start backing up the data in known good partitions, and then delete those partitions, making the disk structure progressively emptier...
