Just started using the Edimax EW-7811Un with this chipset on Ubuntu 12.04 using the built in rtl8192cu driver. Plugged it in, connected to WPA2 network right away, no issues at all.

Sounds like you had a temporary internet timeout. This happens sometimes, you should wait a few min, refresh the repos, and try again.

You are not going to get any Ubuntu action on there. Though if someone has ported it, you might be able to run Android on it.
