I got the same thing. I assumed it had to do with improper shutdown of the computer. But maybe I assumed too much.
Logging in root, and running the file system check manually solved it for me....

Yes, I can use grub to boot into recovery mode. After selecting that option, it gives me several more options. I think one was repair x-something, another was command terminal, continue to boot...
