    Got my solution to getting sound to work on the PinguyOS forum.
    I ran sudo apt-get update
    Then sudo apt-get dist-upgrade. Rebooted and ran alsamixer and unmuted the front speakers...Sound! Woot......

    I ran 'sudo rm -rf /lib/modules/`uname -r`/kernel/sound' and then 'sudo aptitude reinstall linux-headers-2.6.35-23-generic...

    I plugged in the ethernet cable while still in OSX, and after a bit of rebooting the cable modem, the ethernet connection came up! So, I rebooted and it ran great! Did all the updates and rebooted...
