No worries, I never know how much information to include: lshw output below.
(By the way I tried to edit the boot menu but it didn't achieve anything. Still just went through to the "low graphics...
Hi, thanks for your reply. I finally got a chance to try out your suggestion.
I had to do some research to find out if I'm supposed to use ' ' or just the plain text in nomodeset. Turns out just...
So Nvidia stopped providing linux support to my graphics card when my computer upgraded from Linux 3.5.XXX to 3.13.XXX. (Using Ubuntu 12.04).
In order for me to use the computer I have to boot up...
Either way it's time to make sure your backups are in order...
Thanks.
Yes, sorry I had my wires crossed. This is the fault of Nvidia, not Linux.
I checked in System Settings, Details, Graphics, and it said "None found".
To be clear after the upgrade...
I rebooted after a Linux update a while ago and I wasn't really paying attention to the implications of a message like "Nvidia no longer provide a driver for your graphics card" and I was like "Yeah,...
Yeah I have one backup of the photos, so when the drive died I was down to one copy.
In the end I followed the instructions and moved home ok but when I logged back on it wouldn't log on I think...
Yeah, new drive got installed yesterday and works like a dream now. (after stupid brent got his head around the concept of not installing a 64bit OS on a 32bit machine! That's 8 hours of my life I'm...
Thanks,
I was trying to find an output that would list all the drives/partitions/mount points/partition sizes etc all in one place. It's probable that I was confused by the partitions that I...
So I've had a go at installing Ubuntu 12.04 with / on a separate partition to /home. My intention was to be able to do completely fresh installs without having to overly risk my family's data. And...
Ooh. Ok, so I found palimpsest & starts the disk utility (gui of live CD is betraying me) and a few things happened.
Unable to delete partition, check filesystem or format volume "daemon is...
Yeah, cactus. The output of fdisk and parted shows the partition tables I was expecting, but running gparted just sits there scanning for partitions.
Time for a new drive. It's been giving me...
Thanks, I'll give those a try.
Strangely it's able to actually boot back up onto the partition that it started to delete, albeit in read-only mode.
So I admit I got impatient and decided it would be a good idea to turn off the computer after it appeared to hang while deleting a partition. Not actually DOING the partition delete, just I pushed...
Thanks for that advice. I have some random and stupid hardware problems (ie I have to get the dvd-burner from THAT computer, and burn an iso disc on THAT computer, and then move the DVD player to...
Yeah, that's fine. That drive only needs to talk to my router as a media server to the telly and tablet.
Awesome!! The way you said it is EXACTLY what I was trying to achieve the last time I...
Oh, yes, that does look a lot more useful than what I provided.
What's it mean?
brent@Martha:~$ sudo fdisk -l
[sudo] password for brent:
Disk /dev/sda: 1000.2 GB, 1000204886016 bytes
Hi,
I have a computer that's running Ubuntu 12.04 ok but it's starting to get buggy in random and obnoxious ways so I'm going to nuke it and start again.
Can anyone tell me how to set it up so...
site works fine for me.
which is bad news for you because MY ubuntu 12.04 is buggy as all get out so if it works on mine but not yours then you're probably doing badly.
So I was looking for a way to fix a problem of youtube videos (almost) constantly saying "video currently not available" (but only almost constantly, which is the annoying thing). I found advice to...
Thanks, I'm sure that should be it.
Unfortunately I have a pre-existing problem with my bootup which has been giving me the error "Errors were found while checking the disk drive for /. Press F to...
Thank you.

Hi,
Every time I restart my computer I have to go into mediatomb and re-add the folder which has my movies on it. It's on a second drive.
I suspected that it's something to do with that drive...
We have our movies on a 2nd 2TB drive on the family room computer and use a media player on the TV to watch them.
When we restart the computer Mediatomb remembers the location of the Music folder...
