But it is possible to recover from the creation of a partition with gparted ? If I'm not mistaken it does mkfs.ntfs /dev/sda3. Isn't that fatal ?

I was trying to shrink the windows partition on sda3 to install Ubuntu. Apparently it has bad sectors. Which is a problem apparently for the installer. So...
I did the following:
(1) ntfsresize...
Confirming this works for 64bit Ubuntu distro's !
The routing isn't restored after disconnection though. Can't reach the internet anymore then.
But anyway, better this than the pevious case.

A number of threads mention this client works, but I suspect it's only for 32 bits distro's.

I coped with changing the ownership of /etc/mysql/... to "mysql" and start/stop the server on command line.
Now I've reinstalled kubuntu and it works completely again....
I've got it PARTIALLY fixed : The permissions on files somewhere in /var/lib/mysql were wrong.
chown -R mysql.mysql /var/lib/mysql made it possible to start the database manually with "sudo...
For me it didn't. In the end I removed everything. my.cnf and all.
Nothing left to comment out ... :-)

Sadly I have had the same story yesterday. No way to reinstall mysql server after I've uninstalled it. I'm probably going to reinstall the OS...
