    as I said in my other post, rather embarrassingly all I needed to do was to unmute and/or switch on, the digital out, which apparently was labelled "IEC958" in alsamixer.

    Try setting the limit very low, like 1k, you need to work out whether the torrent is actually stopping your browsing (doubtful) or just slowing it right down (likely).
