my system is considerably weaker than yours but i can run most games great...although i have a nvidia card, so im guessing atis drivers are more than likely the problem. atis drivers dont work well...
just download vlc media player from the repository. it'll play virtually anything you can throw at it.
it runs at about 3fps at most, is this a wine problem or eve itself?
you may want to try buying a pair of identical 1gb or 2gb ram sticks so that you can run in dual channel mode, i get better performance on wow with 2gb of ram in dual channel mode than with 3gb...

i had that kind of problem with my old x1950. atis drivers arent very good. if i was you id buy a nvidia card. you should br able to pick up a gforce 8600 or 8800 relatively cheaply.
if it only works on xp and vista for now, why not try the beta under wine using the windows version of firefox?
pretty good, i can see any glitches so far, which is pretty sweet for a beta
