If you are trying to do it with Ubuntu, just put the Ubuntu disk in your CD Drive (Without rebooting) and a window should pop up asking you what you want to do. Hope that helped
I've switched them back on my Ubuntu installation, now I feel at home again (Sort of)
What make of Cd Rs are you using? Could just be a bad batch. Happened to me before with one of the cheaper brands :(
