I have two linux os's as well as a windows install. using a single boot partition managed in kubuntu.
it seems all the files are missing from the boot partition except a 'grub' folder.
thank you, inobe, for your time.
i realize now my typo - i did install opensuse 11.3, not 10.3. originally i tried 11.4 (in the spirit of experimental os's and all), and i could not find some of...
I guess I'll do a reinstall if no one has any suggestions. Does anyone have anything at all for this?
I have Win7, Kubuntu and a third OS (and home) partition for trying out others. I did Arch, Debian and Chakra without problems with triple booting. I skipped the bootloader installation/configuration...

My laptop is usually on constantly, and I've noticed that a couple of times a week the hard drive activity goes crazy and slowly locks up over a few minutes.

Yep, rebooted and things are working great. Typing this on Kubuntu 10.10. Thanks andrew.
I hadn't thought of that. I do prefer to upgrade between versions, and only do wipe/reinstalls if things get squirrely.
For how long does this effect my setup, or is this a special case (new fancy...
I did a few things before I read your post, I won't know if it worked until I reboot so I'm posting this before hand.
What I did was ran:
sudo update-grub-from-legacy
Then:
Following the instructions at:
https://help.ubuntu.com/community/MaverickUpgrades/Kubuntu
I chose to upgrade from the internet, so I ran: kdesudo "do-release-upgrade -m desktop -f kde -d"

I'm running KDE 4.4.1 with Compiz Fusion and KWIN manager.
I have compiz set to rotate the cube when my cursor pushes against the left / right side of the screen, which works great until I create...
i'd suspect it's overheating and shutting down as a safety precaution.
try setting your power profile to use conservative cpu settings, and definitely put a cpu temperature monitor on the desktop...
i've been getting this too, Kubuntu 9.10
i cannot figure out what's going on, nor anything from searches.
my issue is when i wake my computer up it reloads the disc in the drive, which causes it to pop up. then it stays open until i click the icon.

i'm looking for a way to play a particular song by having...
your typo stands out:
ubuntu@ubuntu:~$ sudo mount -o /proc /mnt/pro
mount: can't find /mnt/pro in /etc/fstab or /etc/mtab
also i'm pretty sure you need to run sudo update-grub /dev/sda
the shell would be running what boot scripts, and how to figure out which one is pounding my hd?
i'll do trial and error, that's not a problem, but where are the scripts ran by this process?
i have profiled, which was the bulk of the 15 seconds i took off, and i always let it do it's auto scans.
looking closely at the bootcharts, i noticed the 'sh' process is what's causing all the hd...
Boot times used to be around 45 seconds, as seen in 'original.png', then something happened, turning my boot times to over 3 minutes, as seen in 'first long.png'. I've also attached the latest...
