Try adding a new user via CTRL+ALT+F(1-6) and logging again. Then you could try readding your user / moving and chown'ing your home folder to the new one

why don't you remove unity before upgrade and install it again after that?
Neither. The problem is definitely pulseaudio 4.0 itself, cause I'm running Live 13.10 and encountering the same issues.
That didn't help. At all. Even purging + installing again didn't help.
