Just in case anyone was following this, I built the machine using all the parts listed except the heatsink. I went with a noctua heatsink that has 4 heat pipes and a 90mm fan. I removed the fan and...
Why the motherboard - It was chosen as it was the lowest cost name brand board with the chipset and features I wanted. The form factor was not a concern. I had used MSI boards at a previous employer...
I need a new workstation and I want to build something low cost, quiet, and that generates minimal heat.
I am looking at an MSI mainboard with the H170 chipset and an Intel core i5-6400T Skylake...
I found a way around the remmina issue. I prefer RDesktop and use it for all my other RDP connections but remmina will do until I get RDesktop figured out.
Open a terminal and run these:
sudo...
I upgraded to 16.04.01 LTS and exactly the same issue is still there (RDesktop is still 1.8.3 so this is no surprise).
I get this:

I am considering buying a new Lenovo P50 laptop with the mobile Xeon E3-1505M v5, NVIDIA Quadro M2000M 4GB, and 15.6 4K(3840x2160) IPS Non-Touch display.
Does anyone here have first hand...
Nope. RDP works fine from any other Windows box and works fine from the Jump Desktop RDP software on my android phone. It just will not work from Ubuntu/RDesktop.
Is this a valid solution?
Edit net.ipv4.ip_local_port_range in /etc/sysctl.conf with:
sudo vim /etc/sysctl.conf
or any other editor of your choice and add or change:

I use a ubuntu 14.04LTS instance as an SSH tunnel for multiple users. When the users establish the connections it assigns them a data port that is sometimes above 52000. A certain local ISP has...
I just upgraded from an older Mint 16 install to a fresh Ubuntu 15.10 install. The included older version of rdesktop worked just fine on the Mint 16 install and continues to work fine conecting tot...
Cool. I will try that out.
Thanks
I ended up with the Xeon setup. I am glad I did and the extra cost was worth it. If you are reading this and considering the same thing, the E3-1230Lv3 or E3-1240Lv3 are an excellent choice.

I actually had no problem getting the Xeon E3-1230Lv3. Its special order everywhere (its an OEM chip) but I had it in less than a week for $260.85 shipped ground.

Lately I have been transferring a lot of large files between my workstation and one of my servers. Both are connected to the same gigabit switch.

Since this is a headless server tucked away in my wiring closet the integrated graphics are just wasted power being turned into heat. I have found a retailer that can get me the E3-1230Lv3 (or...
Unfortunately there is no local group. The closest is over an hour away and never responded when I attempted to join. There is not a lot of tech savvy folks here at the beach.
I have removed the...
It is technically repairable. Replacing a dozen caps is not too big of a deal but I suspect I have gotten all the life there is to get out of that machine. I could repair it adnt hen something else...
I suspect I will end up with the Xeon. I have been searching for days for info on pros and cons of the Xeon vs Atom but so far there is little real world info.
I have been leaning heavily toward...
Looks like it would work fine - http://manpages.ubuntu.com/manpages/precise/man4/hpsa.4.html
Not sure on performance. I actually use the P400 with an array of Intel SSDs and it is fine for a...
After 6 years of 24/7 service my MSI wind nettop with an Atom 230 finally died (caps popped on the motherboard) so its time for a new server. This machine was serving 4 websites (2 wordpress and 2...
I set up a second domain on the server and added a test address. I made sure all the DNS records were set up and tested it with mxtoolbox.com with all positive results. I went and sent an inbound...

The server is co-located and no ports are blocked by the ISP. it is running on the same connection (different IP in the same range) as the windows mail server which works fine. Telnet to google works...
Disregard. I decided to scrap the ubuntu mail server idea. It was too much of a pain in the ass.
