ok got everything working great...
I copied all the files from the zip provided on the first page... now I have full sound and full glx
to get the settings to stick I went into the config file in...

I downloaded the zip file the OP posted and moved the file it was hanging on over to the quake2 directory as he said and it booted up just fine.
only problem I have now is it wont save any settings...

you need to colorize to ubuntu logo then it would be perfect!!

well if you read the FAQ for it on the zerowing (official) page, it is not supported at all for ati cards, at this time.

Yeah your right I did a little experimenting, and the option to turn it on in the fonts control doesnt work (but it will be fixed in hoary- not asking... demanding hehe)
but the .fonts.conf works...

you can turn hinting on in the fonts menu in desktop preferences in Warty.

go to Computer>Desktop Preferences>Fonts
Click the "Details..." button.
Select amount of hinting
I chose "Full"...
