I am using Xgl + xevdevserver.
Assigning a usb hub to a $DISPLAY would be the solution, but it is not possible yet.

I do not think pulseaudio -D is needed.Sometimes pulseaudio dies, so i make sure is will start.
Pulseaudio is started per user session, do not ever start it systemwide.
I am still using gdm 2.20 or...

than check if it works;
if it's start to work , put these codes in rc.local

In ubuntu 10.10 you can format usb sticks as normal user with right click on usb stick desktop item.Than you can choose fat32 to format.This without entering a password.
