This works for me. My notes on the slight differences:
* I downloaded the live CD. When booting from the live CD I was offered the choice of "trying" ubuntu or installing. I chose "try".
* I...
Don't feel stupid. This is an absurd UI. If it wants us to use TAB to go to the next field, it should tell us to use TAB to go to the next field. There is no reason for us to think that we should...
Isaac's posting appears to be completely unrelated to this thread. I assume he posted to the wrong thread. The link he references discusses problems with fstab possibly associated with a long...
After installing updates and rebooting, I ran into the "udev is unconfigured" problem as well. This thread worked for me as well.
* I hit 'escape' while rebooting and booted an old version of the...
This appears to be a bogus web-site. It constantly redirects. It would appear that jintachi is a spammer.
For my own reference, since I run into these problems once a quarter since I make my three kids use Linux as well as myself, and I'm the sysadmin:
I removed pulseaudio per VertexPushers...

Thanks for the clear concise instructions. I now have sound output.
I still don't have a microphone working. I debug this using skype, make a test call, echo server. But...
For me, the app armor message appeared somewhere in passing, and my problem may or may not be related. My boots were hanging as well. I was able to boot to recovery mode.
I resolved my problem...
I resolved this by booting the recovery kernel, and selecting the "repair" option. After 15 to 30 minutes and answering a couple of prompts, the repair finished. The system them rebooted normally.
I'm confused. If the system won't boot, exactly how are we supposed to click on the non-existant gnome menu? And why would we look in some random user's home account for debugging information?
I upgraded from Hardy to whatever it lets me upgrade to. The was told there was another upgrade available, I think 9.04, so I upgraded to it. Then was told their was another upgrade available,...
I don't understand why I can't install a new version of Linux and have sound and the screen resolution Just Work (tm).
Don't listen to those people telling you how wonderful this guide is. The...
I think 'rm' might be giving you a misleading error message. I would 'ls -l' the old file to see if there was anything funny with it. I might 'ls -ld' the directories leading up to it. Make sure...

"rescue" is the word I mean instead of "recovery".
I'm installing Linux on my 4th computer at home and having problems getting the machine to boot.
The machine is a about a 3-year old e-machines computer. (Had a seagate 200GB drive in it.) I can...
Try the 'df' command (after inserting the CD into your system). On my system, at the moment, I get:

Note that certain applications can also lock up the sound driver and prevent other applications from using it. For example, firefox spawned a 'realplay' process which grabbed exclusive access to the...
While running fsck at shutdown or at a time that is convenient to me instead of at a random startup is really nice, this doesn't fully solve the problem. The problem is that I don't want my computer...
While trying to do the gutsy upgrade, I got a message telling me to run 'sudo apt-get install -f'. (Of course, I got the message in one of those pop up windows that you can't copy text from. Yuck.)...
I asked to have gutsy install and was told that it would take two hours to download the install. Naturally, during a two hour download, there is a high probability of problems occuring. ...
I started downloading ubuntu-7.04-desktop-i386.iso from Monterey Bay CSU. I immediately realized there was a very small chance that the whole thing would download, but left it running and went...
