[ubuntu] Re: Headless Ubuntu Server Video Transcoding

That's exactly what I did. I'm using PLEX to transcode. I went to their forums and asked the question there. Turns out PLEX will not use the GPU for transcoding, it relies solely upon the CPU.

So I have a question, but first I'll explain my setup. I'm running Ubuntu server 12.04 headless on a decent PC. Core2Duo processor, 2GB RAM, RAID 1 drives. It's currently serving as a file server...

  7. [SOLVED] Re: Comptuer -> Router -> Ubuntu Server box -> Modem -> Internet?

Switch and a wireless access point (if you wanted wifi). It would be a managed switch, preferably.
  8. [SOLVED] Re: Comptuer -> Router -> Ubuntu Server box -> Modem -> Internet?

To be sure, the enterprise solution never involves a router/firewall combo unit.
  9. [SOLVED] Re: Comptuer -> Router -> Ubuntu Server box -> Modem -> Internet?

The cool thing is there's more than one way to skin this cat. I personally run a basic setup in my home:

    Internet > Modem > Router/Firewall -- Server & Computers

If I were to dedicate some...
  10. [SOLVED] Re: Comptuer -> Router -> Ubuntu Server box -> Modem -> Internet?

I would advise against putting your main server and your firewall in the same physical hardware, gotta keep 'em separated. That way if the firewall gets hammered and starts dropping packets, your...

[ubuntu] Re: 3 gp converter not working in Ubuntu 12

Now, this may not be proper, but it works for me. My phone records video in 3gp format. All I do is change the extension to mp4 and they play just fine. I read on a different forum that they both...

[ubuntu] Re: VPN connection won't stay alive

This is my exact problem. Still haven't found a solution to it. It happens on my desktop as well as my laptop so I'm confident it's not a problem with the NIC or its drivers. Windows machines stay...
  13. [ubuntu] Re: Is verify and repair for a RAID 1 available and/or necessary?

I did set up the email function. Thanks for the reminder :)
  14. [ubuntu] Re: Is verify and repair for a RAID 1 available and/or necessary?

So it's enabled and on that schedule by default then, on every install? Excellent. Thank you for your help.
  15. [ubuntu] Is verify and repair for a RAID 1 available and/or necessary?

So, with most other RAID 1's I've set up on Windows servers and Windows desktops I've always made a habit of running a verify and repair on the RAID on a regular basis.

    I'm running Ubuntu Server...

    [ubuntu] Equivalent of sfc /scannow

So, I'm coming from a long history with Windows. I understand that the Linux equivalent of chkdsk is fsck to check the integrity of the file system.

What I'm wondering is if there is an...

Well, problem is solved. I installed Linux Mint and the VPN works flawlessly. Not sure what's _that_ different between Mint and a stock install of Ubuntu, but it must be significant.
