    A note to Canonical

Please allow this thread to remain, I'm hoping it will begin a movement within the Ubuntu community to increase the value of the Ubuntu brand.

There is a saying; "what we tolerate, we perpetuate"....

    [ubuntu] Problem with mouse right-click

I'm having a problem with my wireless mouse.

    Symptom:
Now and then, after a right-click using the wireless mouse, my pointer will get "stuck" and refuse to work until I pull the battery from the...
  3. [ubuntu] Re: How do I get this scroll helper to always show?

Ok, it looks like this isn't possible. I find it inconsistent that one app has this item and others lack it.

    Thank you for your help.
  4. [ubuntu] Re: How do I get this scroll helper to always show?

My question was: How do I get this to show in all apps? See the rectangle outlined in red, next to the red arrow. That little rectangle with the arrows on it, that is what I want to show in the...
  5. [ubuntu] How do I get this scroll helper to always show?

I've noticed that in some of my apps there is a rectangle that appears near the scrollbar to aid in scrolling (the rectangle has up/down arrows on it), but some apps don't app to have this item. It...
  6. Re: I'm hesitant to file new bug reports

Could the reason for the lack of reports from other users be that the other users see that some bugs go untouched for years so they feel it's a waste of time to file a report? I have another bug...
  7. I'm hesitant to file new bug reports

I found a huge bug in an app - vital a text box was missing from the app window. I filed a bug about this and you can find the bug report here.

    1) This app couldn't have been tested before being...

Re: What are Web apps for?

You don't have to install some webapps, some of them ship with Ubuntu.

Re: What are Web apps for?

A webapp just adds the normal bookmark to the Unity launcher.

I feel that webapps are unnecessary, they cause code bloat, and this practice opens the door for potential bugs.

    Re: How was it tested?

Hmm.. it sounds like Canonical has already thought of everything that can be done. But, I'll keep brainstorming, maybe I'll come up with something useful someday.

    Re: How was it tested?

I just had another idea. Perhaps Canonical should create a small group of people who are average users, not developers or power users. They could call this group the AUL, or Average User Liason...

    Re: How was it tested?

When I filed the bug report the filing process asked me to complete a number of steps. I undertand why these steps are needed as it helps provide as much information as possible to get the bug report...

    Re: How was it tested?

Thank you for the work-around, it's very helpful.

Agreed. And, at this point I'm wondering why this app exists at all in Ubuntu given that there is a better contacts-related app in...

    Re: How was it tested?

I went ahead and reported the bug, it can be found here:
    https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/gnome-contacts/+bug/1249947

I haven't reported a bug in years, I hope I did everything correctly.

    Re: How was it tested?

Good point. But, on the other side of the coin I didn't even know there was a Contacts menu item in the messages menu until someone mentioned it a few posts back.

    Re: How was it tested?

I have an idea. Canonical could do an anonymous poll and find out how many people actually file bug reports when they encounter a problem with an app. I'm betting that metric is much smaller than...

No, they're not free of bugs, but they have undergone more thorough testing than does Ubuntu.

    Re: How was it tested?

Yes, huge mistake on my part.

I would be more willing to believe some people ran the app, assumed it was broken and found another app to do the job because they didn't have the time or the...

Re: How to load a downloaded program

If this a Windows app you won't be able to run it unless you use Wine. Search for Wine, if needed, in the Ubuntu Software Center.
  22. Re: Updated to 13.10, windows have no 'control' bar (e.g. min/max/close buttons)

Looks like you've somehow lost your window manager, or it isn't running. The window manager is responsible for drawing the frame and titlebar for each window.

Re: Maybe I'm doing something wrong in that it takes many steps to log in?

That sounds like a feature of Chromium. I wonder if setting Firefox to remember cookies and passwords would help.

Re: Maybe I'm doing something wrong in that it takes many steps to log in?

Logging in via SSO (Single Sign On) does take a few more steps, but, knowing the community, there is a reason for this. I'm thinking the SSO login can help log into more than just the forums.

[ubuntu] Re: Nothing but grief with Ubuntu 12.04

If there is no OS on that computer other than Ubuntu, then removing Ubuntu completely would leave you with an empty hard disk. You won't be able to remove Ubuntu and return to Windows, if that's what...
