Solution:

Install yorick using the readme file, then

sudo ln -s /lib/libreadline.so.5 /lib/libreadline.so.4
sudo ln -s /lib/libncurses.so.5 /lib/libtermcap.so.2

That should fix the missing...

A better technique is to convert the PDF to a DJVU file. I love DJVU files because they are a lot faster and smaller in filesize.

sudo apt-get install pdf2djvu

Oops. I just realized my mistake. I meant to use --pages instead of -pages. Now it works fine. :D

This command works to convert every page but fails before creating the djvu:
pdf2djvu -o surveying.djvu 013*.pdf

but after it completes all 900 pages, it fails because of some bookmarking issue...
