If you're trying to run adb from a shell why don't you just:
cd <android-sdk directory>
cd platform-tools
./adb kill-server
./adb start-server
./adb shellI you see a # sign then you're in.
try scalpel
type "apt-get isntall scalpel" (without the quotes) in your favorite search engine
and you'll find everything you need to know.
