    What version of ubuntu are you using ?
    The fix was for 9.04 with default driver .. ( it just enabled it )

    The very faint sound can mean that you didn't crank up all volume...

    Open a terminal and give the "top" command, with that your able to see the process that is causing the load. Copy that and come back to me.

    /boot/grub/menu.lst has nothing !! to do with your driver
    do you mind giving me that link where you saw that ?

    driver version 96.43.13 ? why such on old one ? that one is ancient. ( might well be the reason )
    what graphical card do you have btw ?
    ubuntu version ? 32 / 64 bit ?
    did you manually edit...

    fix is non-destructive and done in less then a minute, why don't you try and report here ?

    also notice I found a 2nd solution, but this involves compiling your own...

    mmm, didn't test it but I guess so ( this mobo is now in use as a fileserver for my cluster )..

    The problem you described is caused by wrong buffered UPNP capability info provided by your screen ( not a flatscreen but a CRT one right ? )..

    it's obvious that this won't ever work.. file is empty and lacking correct permissions.

    doing a

    sudo nano /etc/X11/xorg.conf
    gives it the right permissions.... but if you want even more...

    Linux uses vfs ( virtual file system ) which effectively layers and abstracts devices ( virtualize if you like ).....

    raids are self contained and portable... they don't really need a config, all config data ( from the raid ) is on the RAID itself > mdadm has an option to export the bitmap onto a seperate device...

    I second that, but the main reason ( according to me ) for using HW raid's in the industry is slightly different.
    Most large deployments use pre-build OEM racks with HW-raid...
