    Yea, I noticed that it didn't persist across a reboot.

    I followed your instructions, and now it does persist across a reboot.

    That last command get my touchpad working again.

    For the record, my touchpad is still being recognized as a wheel mouse.

    I replaced amd64 with i386 in two places, once in each of the first two commands.

    I tried your newest commands (with i386 replacing amd64 since I have a 32 bit system) and I still get the same module format error when executing the last command.

    When your commands didn't work for me the first time, I tried them again without thinking what I was executing...so I lost my backup :(

    I also had this problem after trying to update a fresh USB install (via the USB Startup Disk Creator).

    Changing the extension .lz to .gz (as described above) also worked for me.
