    Thanks much for the hint on WPA. This has helped somewhat and I've gotten things down to a single issue.

    1 - I crashed the router and reconfigured it for WPA;

    I am conceding that I will probably never get my Atheros (Netgear WG311) wireless card to connect to the Netgear WGR614 router. Better said, that I will never get an IP address out of the router.
